What a Hospital TV Show Taught Me About the Technology We Never Think About

Written by Systel Business Equipment | Jul 31, 2026

I’ll admit, I wasn’t expecting a TV show to make me think about office technology. Lately, I’ve been watching “The Pitt”, a medical drama that follows the doctors, nurses, and staff working through the fast-paced challenges of a fictional Pittsburgh Emergency Department. One episode in particular stuck with me, after a nearby hospital in the show was hit by a cyberattack. Many of their patients were redirected to The Pitt, creating even more demand for an already busy Emergency Department. As the threat continued, the team made the decision to temporarily shut down their own digital systems while their IT team worked to strengthen security. Suddenly, the technology that normally worked quietly in the background was no longer available; digital patient charts that would typically appear instantly were gone, communication became more difficult and manual, which left staff to rely on paper records, handwritten notes, printers, fax machines, and other tools that many hospitals and clinics have moved away from in recent years.

What caught my attention wasn't really the cyberattack itself, but just how much hospitals and healthcare organizations rely on technology to deliver care every minute of the day. From accessing electronic health records and communicating between departments, to printing patient wristbands, scanning documents, and coordinating with pharmacies and specialists, nearly every interaction depends on connected systems working together. When those systems became unavailable, even temporarily, the impact is immediate. While most businesses don't operate like an emergency department, the same idea applies. Think about your own workday. You log into your computer, answer phone calls, print proposals, scan signed agreements, search for customer files, or access information stored in the cloud. None of those tasks feel extraordinary, but behind each one is technology quietly helping your business move forward. When those systems are reliable, work gets done, and when they aren't, productivity slows, communication suffers, and even routine tasks become more difficult.

At Systel, we believe technology should work so seamlessly that your team can focus less on the systems behind the scenes and more on the work that matters. That's why we provide integrated solutions from managed IT and cybersecurity to print management, document management, and business communications, that are designed to keep organizations productive, connected, and secure. As we continue to expand our work with healthcare providers across North Carolina, we've seen firsthand how important reliable technology is in environments where every second matters. But whether you work in healthcare, manufacturing, education, local government, or any other industry, the goal is the same: providing technology that simply works, so your people can do their jobs without interruption.

That episode of The Pitt reminded me that the technology we rely on most is often the technology we appreciate the least. Not because it isn't important, but because it has become such a seamless part of how we work. The best technology is almost invisible... until it isn't.
